The Beauty of Things Coming Together
My name is Bethany Jacobs and I recently began working for Child Legacy in Boerne, TX this past April 2010. My husband Josh and I had the privilege of visiting Jeff and Karen a week ago. Our experience in Malawi was life changing. Having only traveled in North America previously we weren’t quite sure what we had gotten ourselves into. We had seen pictures and heard stories but there really is nothing like experiencing Malawi first hand.
Our journey from Lilongwe, the capital city, to the project was nothing short of eye opening. The villages along the way consisted of small mud and brick huts all of which had no plumbing or electricity and most weren't complete. Children would run barefoot after the truck and wave as we passed. There were men and women working in the fields preparing them for planting, children hauling cattle, goats running everywhere, and a lot of people on bikes. Then suddenly, out of nowhere we saw three wind turbines spinning in the distance. The view was stunning! Seeing the clinic, two staff houses, dining hall, three guest cottages, and solar house in the middle of the bush was a beautiful site. And on top of all that they are being operated by solar energy! In just two years all of the buildings have been constructed with great craftsmanship, and they are unlike anything that you see in the city of Lilongwe.
During our eight night stay Josh and I helped with the finishing work of one of the guest cottages. We worked very closely with their painter, Kingston and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know him. We were amazed at the gratitude that he portrayed despite his circumstances. His wife, son, and daughter all live in the city of Lilongwe, about 30 miles away, in a home without electricity and hot water while he stays at the project site during the week. Despite the distance from his family we never once heard him complain. He continually expressed his gratitude for his job and the opportunity to make a better life for his family.
The greatest impact for me as an employee was being able to see firsthand the frustrations for both Jeff and Karen. The bureaucracy of the government, the strain of trying to alter a people's entire mind set, and the daily physical toll are enough to make most people quit. In spite of these things Jeff and Karen continue to persevere. Their joy comes in seeing the finished product of their work, the joy of the Malawian people when they see all that has been done for them, and the new hope that the people have for the future. It is a tremendous blessing to work for such incredible people! I am so excited to be a part of this great organization, and I have returned to the U.S. with a drive to help Child Legacy succeed in every facet of their mission. In partnering with Child Legacy you are providing fulfillment of physical needs, and instilling a living hope in Christ to a desperate people.
